Lightening

Today is marked as 'review' in the whole schedule thing I created and, to be honest, when I chose that, I had absolutely no idea what that was going to be about. I'm not a particularly adventurous person and I don't really try a lot of new things. So when I woke up this morning and thought about what I was going to blog about, I was drawing a blank. It's coming up on 9pm when I'm starting this and I've finally found something I want to review.

Since I'm on school holidays, I've had a lot of time on my hands and, between moving house and working on my own dumb, crazy mission to complete a maths syllabus, I've been watching a hell of a lot of movies on Netflix. Today, I watched a movie called "Struck By Lightening" and that's what I've decided I want to talk about today.

Now, when you've spent a lot of time on the website, Netflix seems to turn into an endless list of cartoons, stand up comedy and 90's throwbacks. However, it's a lot like a thrift shop in that, if you really rake around, you might find a gem. It's also like a thrift shop in that, the longer you spend there, the more you seem to find value in things that aren't worth much in the conventional sense. Just saying, I've watched waaaaaaay too many episodes of "Educating Yorkshire" and "Little Britain".

Back to the movie, I'm not really sure what to say about it other than that it's special. Once in a while, you watch something that has an effect on you. It's not a particularly complex story and the characters aren't extremely original but the whole mood of the film just left me breathless. I think the closer you feel to Carter, the main character, the more you will enjoy this movie because I seemed to empathise with him so much. He's not popular and he doesn't want to be. He's got his own plans for life and it doesn't involve the people who surround him. The boy has a dream and everything he does is an attempt to get a step closer to his aspirations. Carter may be selfish and possibly a little crazy, but he has the right intentions. He's misunderstood and doesn't really seem to give a shit about regular societal expectations. I'm not saying he's me but...

(Just a warning though, if you're looking for a happy ending, you're not really going to get it here. Watch the first few minutes of the movie and you'll know why. Sorry, no spoilers here!)

"Struck by Lightening reminded me of the fragility of human life and the fact that we don't always get what we want. If you've got and hour and a half to spare, I would seriously recommend giving it a go. Not to mention the seriously philosophical shit that Carter Phillips comes away with.
